One of the first tips in the world of decorating, or design of any sort it to group items in odd numbers, it is scientifically proven that your eye prefers to see things in odd numbers.
There is also a well known designer technique which involves creating a visual triangle in your styling. Triangles are eye pleasing and work well to balance out your “shelfscape”. Notice the bottles on the dark shelf below……do you see the triangle?
When you are styling each shelf, be sure to add a variety of layered textures, and groupings of objects. Stacked books make fantastic perches for meaningful objects. Frames layered in front of vases add interest.
Add Varying Heights – Incorporate elements with varying heights. Display smaller accessories in front and graduate to taller and larger pieces behind.
Now step back and take a look, live with it, it may take a couple tries to get your shelves looking like you imagine them too. Don’t be afraid to adjust or tweak after deciding you don’t like where something was.
